I'm having problems entering my Social Insurance Number (SIN) at step 3. What should I do?
The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit number that you need to work in Canada or to have access to federal government programs and benefits, such as Job Bank.
These are the most common problems at step 3:
- If you receive an error message that states, “you may have incorrectly entered information into one of the fields”, double check that:
- your SIN is entered with no spaces;
- your mother’s maiden name field only has the last name of your mother at birth and is spelled correctly; and
- your birthdate is entered in the format of YYYY-MM-DD.
- If the error message states that the SIN entered is already in use, this means that there’s already a user account associated to this SIN in the Job Bank system. You cannot create more than one user account.
- If your SIN starts with a 9, you will be unable to use it to create a user account in Job Bank. SINs that begin with a 9 are temporary and valid only until the expiry date indicated on the immigration document that authorizes you to work in Canada.
